Autumn has arrived and the BlackBox Jazz Festival, the jazz music celebration that received a moving reception in February 2024, is just around the corner with its new venture emphasizing the human voice.
The BlackBox Jazz Music Festival: Vocal Edition will be held in the welcoming hall of the Parnassos Literary Society, in Karytsi Square and will host renowned and emerging jazz artists in 10 unique concerts.
The curtain opens on October 18th with Savina Yannatou and pianist Spyros Manesis. The singer improvises with the pianist, performing songs from Southern Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Lebanon, Spain, Greece and North Africa in different languages and dialects. On the same day, the “Drums & Voice Jazztronica Duet”, the project of vocalist Angeliki Toumpanaki and drummer, composer and sound designer Elias Doumanis, will appear on the stage of the Parnassos, who, with a highly experimental and improvisational mood, will take us from the natural sound of percussion and vocals to the polymorphic dimension of electronic music!
On Saturday, October 19th, the BlackBox Jazz Music Festival welcomes Manto with YFG, the musical vehicle of virtuoso bassist, teacher and composer George Fakanas, who will take us on a journey through fusion soundscapes, as well as the magic of film music. On the same day, the Stathis Anninos Quartet (Stathis Anninos: piano, keyboard, arrangements, Michalis Tsiftsis: guitar, Kostas Patsiotis: double bass, Thanos Hatzianagnostou: drums) will also appear on stage, who, with the collaboration of singer Katerina Polemi, will guide us through “Sounds of the World”, a multi-volume journey from Savvopoulos to Villa-Lobos.
The first cycle of the festival closes on Sunday, October 20th with the ensemble of Elli Paspala (David Lynch: saxophone, flute, Takis Farazis: piano, Petros Varthakouris: double bass, Alexandros-Drakos Ktistakis: drums), in jazz standards, which reminds us again with her unique voice. On the same evening, singer Spyros Kleissas will appear, along with the trio of pianist Giorgos Tsolis, in jazz standards and small surprises. Guest star is the Cuban Jorge Vistel (trumpet).
Shortly before October comes to an end, on Thursday, October 31, the lights of the BlackBox Jazz Music Festival will once again turn on the stage, so that Nasia Gofa and her Jazz Tales band (Thomas Mitrousis: guitar, Kostas Patsiotis: double bass, Anastasis Gouliaris: drums, Stefanos Kozanis: piano) will join us and present us, in addition to her recent multi-album album "Erkyna", compositions from a wide musical spectrum. She will be succeeded on stage by the award-winning Czech singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Milli Janatkova together with Czech saxophonist Štěpán Škoch, with her new audiovisual project “In Rhythm”, in which natural instruments, tradition, improvisation, pre-recorded loops and video art are combined under her guidance and follow the inspiration of the moment.
On Friday, November 1st, we will enjoy two more unique concerts: the evening will be opened by the trio of saxophonist Dimitris Tsakas (Kimon Karoutzos, double bass, Alexandros-Drakos Ktistakis, drums), with the voice of Anastasia Konstantinidou in a performance of jazz music and speech: the emphasis falls on the legacy of Charlie Parker, combined with poetry and storytelling. Their performance will include compositions from the trio's first album, which was just released. Next up is Irini Konstantinidou and her Quintet (Markos Chaidemenos: piano, Kimon Karoutzos: double bass, Panagiotis Kostopoulos: drums, Roman Gomez: bandoneon), who will present us with cool songs from their recent album.
